The J12

Launched in 2000 and named after the J-class racing yachts, the J12 was the first watch to make high-tech ceramic the point rather than a detail. Scratch-resistant, warm against the wrist and colour-stable, it arrived in black, gained white in 2003, and was comprehensively redesigned in 2019 with a new bezel tooth count, a slimmer bezel and the in-house-supplied Calibre 12.1 automatic visible through a new sapphire caseback.

Première and Boy·Friend

Première was Chanel's first watch, from 1987, and its octagonal case is drawn directly from the stopper of the No. 5 bottle and the shape of the Place Vendôme. Boy·Friend takes a rounded rectangular case and a chain-link or leather strap, sitting between the two. Code Coco borrows the clasp from the 2.55 handbag.

Sizing across the J12

The J12 is offered at 33mm, 38mm and, on older references, 41mm, and the 38mm is the size that reads as genuinely unisex. Ceramic is denser than steel, so a J12 weighs more than its size suggests and sits securely without being top-heavy. Première and Boy·Friend are considerably smaller and dressier. Diamond configurations range from bezel-only to full pavé, and we identify factory settings against aftermarket work.

Ceramic, condition and enquiry

Ceramic resists scratching far better than steel but is brittle, so we check bezels and links for chips rather than for scuffs, and we describe any we find. Bracelet links can be replaced. Our Chanel inventory is narrow; if you want a particular J12 size, colour or diamond configuration, contact us and we will source it. Every piece is authenticated in-house, and we buy and trade Chanel.
