Carrera and Monaco

The Carrera was designed by Jack Heuer in 1963 for drivers, and the brief was legibility: no tachymeter clutter on the dial, a wide-open layout and a tension ring carrying the scale. It remains the most wearable TAG Heuer chronograph, now offered with the in-house Heuer 02 movement and around 80 hours of reserve, and at the top of the range with a COSC-certified Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon that undercuts most of the tourbillon market by a wide margin.

The Monaco arrived in 1969 as the first square water-resistant automatic chronograph, with its crown on the left because the original Chronomatic movement did not need hand-winding. Steve McQueen wore one in Le Mans and the design has barely changed since.

Movements

Modern references split between the in-house Heuer 02 and Calibre 16 and the older ETA and Sellita-based automatics. Both are dependable; the in-house calibres bring longer power reserve and a column wheel, the supplied ones are cheaper to service. We will tell you which a given reference carries.

Sizing and daily wear

Carrera runs 39mm to 44mm depending on generation, and the older 39mm and 41mm references are the most wearable of the line. Monaco is 39mm square, which wears closer to a 42mm round watch because of the case geometry, and the left-hand crown takes adjustment if you are used to a conventional layout. Both are comfortable daily watches rather than occasion pieces. Tell us your wrist size before buying unseen.

Condition and trade

We inspect every watch in-house, check pusher and chronograph function before listing, and describe condition as we find it. Box and papers are noted where present. Pieces listed as price on request are quoted on enquiry, and we buy and trade TAG Heuer.
