Conceived by Gérald Genta in a single night and unveiled at the 1972 Basel Fair following two years of development, the Royal Oak 5402ST was a singular statement: a steel luxury watch with an octagonal case measuring 39mm, a black dial with luminescent index hour markers and luminescent hands, and an automatic movement. From 1972 through 1976, this reference stood as the sole Royal Oak in production — offered in one material, with one dial configuration — before the collection expanded into the vast and prolific range it became thereafter.
This particular example is an "A series" first-edition piece, placing it among the earliest examples produced. The black dial carries natural patina consistent with its age, and the watch presents with a couple of minor scuffs. The scratch-resistant crystal, fixed bezel, push/pull crown, bracelet with folding clasp, and date function all remain as originally specified. The condition is described as pristine.
